Io invece nei giorni scorsi lo sentivo in radio e in tv nella pubblicità di Uliveto realizzata in occasione degli europei di calcio.

Ho registrato la puntata tramite v cast.it proprio perchè Angela aveva detto che lo avrebbero ricordato. E' stato un ricordo breve ma molto bello.

Grazie mille, mi è dispiaciuto perdermelo. E' stato un bel modo di ricordarlo, Piero Angela anche in un intervista al Corriere della sera aveva messo in evidenza la sua "lettura intelligente", capace di capire e far capire i testi.

Claudio Capone, Who Dubbed Luke Skywalker In 'Star Wars' Trilogy, Is Celebrated in Death

ROME -- When Claudio Capone died of a stroke a week ago, actors John Travolta, Don Johnson and Ronn Moss all lost their voice -- in Italian.

The 55-year-old Mr. Capone was a towering figure -- a leading doppiatore, or dubber, in a land that has for decades shunned movies with subtitles in favor of Hollywood popcorn blockbusters buttered with rapid-fire Italian staccato.
When Claudio Capone died last week, celebrities like John Travolta and Don Johnson lost their voice -- in Italian. Now producers are scrambling to fill the hole left by Italy's star dubber. (July 3)

The best Italian dubbers are themselves actors who boast symbiotic relationships with Hollywood stars, mastering their verbal tics to the point that Italian audiences consider dubbers inseparable from the people they dub.

"He is very much part of the character for me," said Mr. Moss, who plays the repentant playboy Ridge Forrester in the CBS TV soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."

Mr. Capone had dubbed Mr. Moss for Italian viewers since the show began more than two decades ago, and now producers are scrambling to find a replacement.

"They told me to find a voice like Claudio's, and I said it's not possible!" says Massimiliano Manfredi, who casts dubbers for the soap opera when he is not supplying his voice to Adrien Brody, Orlando Bloom and Edward Norton.

The anxiety is shared across the Atlantic in the U.S. The domestic market for "The Bold and the Beautiful" makes up only a fraction of the show's daily audience world-wide, says David Gregg, a spokesman for the soap opera's production company.

And while the tall, strapping, handsome 56-year-old Mr. Moss is a major factor in the show's success in the U.S., he is nothing but "lightwaves" abroad, Mr. Gregg says. Mr. Capone provided the "sound waves" that touched the audience.

Mr. Capone got his first big break in the world of dubbing when he was cast in the late 1970s as the voice of Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars." When the young Jedi knight battled Darth Vader, Italians saw a young Mark Hamill wielding his lightsaber. What they heard, however, was the voice of Mr. Capone, struggling against the forces of the dark side.

Mario Maldesi, the "dubbing director" behind the Star Wars trilogy, says Mr. Capone was "born for the role" of Luke.

Never before had Mr. Maldesi heard a voice like Mr. Capone's when the aspiring dubber turned up at the casting call as a relative unknown. "That voice, it was so pure," Mr. Maldesi recalls.

Mr. Capone racked up roles supplying his voice to some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Martin Sheen, Michael Douglas, Bill Murray and John Malkovich. He also landed steady gigs narrating nature documentaries and dubbing the voice of Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" -- and of Mr. Moss's soap-opera role as Ridge Forrester.

Mr. Moss, who has portrayed Ridge Forrester since 1987, met his counterpart many years ago at a party in Rome organized for the launch of the show in Italy, where it is called "Beautiful."

At first, the idea of someone interpreting his voice seemed "a little strange" to Mr. Moss. But the actor quickly warmed to Mr. Capone's rich baritone.

"It had a nice resonance to it," he says. When Mr. Moss now travels to Italy he is often approached by fans who are surprised the actor doesn't speak Italian, he says, adding: "I always disappoint them."

Dubbing has its dark side.

The craft emerged in the 1930s when Hollywood, wary of subtitles, began using American actors to dub films into foreign languages for export.

Italians, however, were quickly turned off by the Hollywood experiment, which brought movies to their shores in heavily accented "Italo-Americano," says 85-year-old Mr. Maldesi, who now teaches the profession at the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema in Rome. The shoddy dubbing came to an end under the regime of dictator Benito Mussolini, who banned most foreign goods, including movies without homegrown dubbers.

Although dubbing now provides a steady income to many Italian actors, some say the profession can get in the way of their acting careers. Italian producers increasingly prefer to simply dub Hollywood exports rather than mount their own costly productions, so Italian-language roles have become more scarce.

"It's the cat that bites its tail. Perhaps if there were less dubbing there would be more screen roles," says actor Alessandro Rossi, who lends his voice to Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And because the business is so big, unhappy dubbers can sink an entire movie season. When Italy's dubbers went on strike during the summer of 1998, dozens of Hollywood movies saw their Italian release delayed, including Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan."

There is another big drawback: For Italian actors to succeed at dubbing, they must keep their heads down. Dubbers who court the spotlight risk becoming a distraction to audiences who are expected to identify voices with specific Hollywood celebrities -- not with the dubbers themselves.

For Mr. Capone, however, camera close-ups were

r an issue. Although Mr. Capone acted on stage in his early career, he did not like being the center of attention, says Claudio Angeletti, his longtime business partner. "Claudio was very, very discreet," Mr. Angeletti says.

In death, however, Mr. Capone is having a harder time keeping a low profile. On Wednesday, Italy's top dubbers, Italian celebrities and family members filed into Rome's baroque "Church of Artists" for Mr. Capone's funeral. No photos of the man were in view. Yet his wooden casket, which remained closed, drew loud applause from the packed pews as it was carried out of the church.

Ennio Libralesso, the onetime voice of the late Charles Bronson, took to the lectern with a message from Mr. Capone's mentor, the Rev. Raffaello Lavagna, an 89-year-old priest who could not be present.

Recalling how Father Lavagna cast Mr. Capone in his first lead role in a stage production, Mr. Libralesso intoned: "Dear Claudio, how can we forget when you were chosen from among 130 children for your innate self-confidence. You were proud. You were 7 years old!"

Mr. Moss was on the set of the soap opera in Los Angeles when he got word of his alter ego's death. Whoever steps into Mr. Capone's various voice roles, he says, "will have big shoes to fill."

Mr. Capone's 26-year-old son Davide, an aspiring dubber, says he isn't ready to assume any of the roles his father left behind. The pitch of his voice, he says, is still too high for more mature roles like Ridge Forrester. "I could

r even think about it," he says, adding: "It's not easy choosing the same career as your father."

Ron Moss doveva saperlo e doveva intervenire, visto che si erano conosciuti e lui aveva stima di Capone.
